Chapter 19
âUm, yeah,â Ameris said, looking anywhere but at him. She knew he didnât believe her; she wouldnât even believe her. Everything she had read about the Alatratus was that it never released its prey. But she didnât know what else to say; she couldnât expose her magic to him. She barely knew anything about it herself. Father Thomas had told Ameris her whole life to keep it buried.
Magic users had formerly existed peacefully alongside non-magic users, but the King had wiped out all magic. Rumor had it that heâd even killed his wife because she had been a magic-user. Nobody was really sure what had happened. One day, magic-users dwelled among them; the next, they were rounded up and killed. Any magic-users that still did exist were forced to never show their powerâlike Ameris. She often wondered if any magic-users still existed; she would never know. Nobody would ever show their magic and risk immediate death at the hands of the King. Father Thomas used to tell her of days in the not-so-far past when magic-users dwelt among them.
Farmers with earth magic grew crops in plentiful numbers, feeding not only their families but whole villages as well. Soldiers with fire magic kept their kingdom safe, keeping others from invading their kingdom. Sailors used their wind magic to guide their vessels across the waters, keeping their kingdom safe from an invasion from sea and keeping their kingdom supplied with fish. Few had the power of water magic, but those who did worked hand in hand with the farmers to keep food bountiful. Their kingdom had been one of joy, light, color, sound, and happiness. Now it was dull and dirty, the villages constantly on the brink of starvation. Part of Father Thomasâ plan was to restore the kingdom to what it once was by restoring magic to the kingdom. She didnât know if it would happen in her lifetime, but she knew the first step was to eliminate the King who despised all magic. That was where her role came in. Her role was to infiltrate the kingdom and work her way up through the ranks to get close to the King. From there, the plan got a little hazy. Once she was close enough to the King to be able to know his comings and goings and his private gatherings and events, she would coordinate an assault with Father Thomas and the rebels. He claimed he knew of many magic-users still. He, of course, never would tell Ameris their names for their protection. He kept her out of most of the plans. All she knew was that when she had enough information for Father Thomas, he would appear in the Kingâs Court. That would be her sign for things to move forward. He would tell her the plan at that point or maybe at some point before that. She wasnât really sure.
âAmeris.â Ameris suddenly was brought back to reality. How long had Darian been calling her name?
âSorry,â she said quickly.
